Harnessing the Unique Power of Teens to Advance Climate Legislation
Date: Sunday, October 15, 2017
Time: 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.
Location: Community Room, Northampton Police Department, 29 Center Street, Northampton, MA
Trainers: Rep. Solomon Goldstein-Rose, Adele Franks and Lilly Lombard
Teens are uniquely positioned to influence legislators on crucial climate legislation. When they face teens, legislators realize they are facing the future! In three hours, you will learn the basics of our Massachusetts legislature (state government 101), the key political players, current climate-related bills—and practice the best communication strategies for influencing one’s elected officials.
After the training, you will be invited to join a network of other trained teen climate leaders who have met with several state representatives, and, in June 2017, delivered a testimony at the Massachusetts State House public hearing on a climate-related bill. Marc Breslow, Ph.D., economist and co-director of Climate Xchange, described the teens’ testimony as “the best, most impactful speech of the day.”
You will be inspired by the example of Rep. Solomon Goldstein-Rose, age 23, the youngest representative in the Massachusetts State House, who built his political campaign on the platform of transforming Massachusetts into a clean energy center for the world.
We will serve a substantial, healthy, delicious snack.
This class is capped at 15 students.
