Songs for Social Justice Movements
February 24, 2020 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm EST

Trainer: Evelyn Harris, a powerhouse vocalist and former member of Sweet Honey In the Rock, is a Grammy‐nominated composer whose remarkable instrument creates stirring interpretations of the traditional African‐American song canon. Her performances encompass spirituals, freedom songs, jazz, pop, rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, and the blues. A remarkable teacher, song‐leader, and leader in movements for equity and social justice, Evelyn brings her amazing gifts and talents to the Truth School to help individuals and groups find their voice and express their power.
Class Description: Borrowing from the American Civil Rights Movement, I will teach old and new songs used in the struggle for freedom and justice. Since many songs come from the spiritual canon, created by slaves, and have familiar melodies, we will add harmony lines above and below the melody. I am asking those with strong voices to be song leaders and soloists so please let me know upon arrival if you fit that category. No one has to “audition” but if I know the strong voices up front, it will save time so we get more songs done. All vocal levels, vocal ranges and formal or informal vocal experiences – sopranos, altos, tenors and basses – are welcome to participate in this class.
