This workshop will bring together men of color to explore participants’ dreams, choices, fears and questions both in our individual lives and as fathers. During the two sessions, we will decide together which of these questions we will focus on to guide our discussions: What joys, fantasies and nightmares do you have as a man and as a father? The only thing I need is a job? I am more than my job. Who do I talk to about being afraid? What questions do I have about this new father role? What are my choices around being in my child’s/children’s life? Where do I go to ask questions? How do I know what is “good parenting?” What experiences can I give my child so that they can grow up to be whole? What is my family story that I want my child to understand from me? How do I not do the same thing that was done to me, even though it made me “a stronger man?” How do I deal with the angry feelings I have about my father, the man who made it possible for me to be here? What do I do with my moods? How can I separate the relationship I have with my child and the mother of my child, if I need to? How do I mentor a young brother, cousin or friend? How can I best honor this child, this precious relationship in my role as father?
